D.L. Poulin, Inc.

Corporate Overview

Construction seems to course through the veins of Maine’s Poulin family. Dave Poulin grew up watching his father, a residential and light commercial contractor, build a successful business. Once Dave’s formal education was complete, he plunged into “post-graduate” education, seeking to learn all he could—from finish carpentry and estimating to general management, working alongside his father.

Then, in 1974, with ten years of knowledge and experience under his belt, Dave set out on his own, founding D.L. Poulin, Inc. Since that time, the firm has grown to be one of Maine’s most respected general contractors, one that has not only become a fixture at Brunswick Naval Air Station, but has successfully completed numerous schools, multi-family housing projects, restaurants, retail stores, municipal projects, healthcare work and more. And now, D.L. Poulin, has begun exporting its talents and New England work ethic, expanding its reach all along the Atlantic coast.

Over the years, Dave has assembled a dedicated team with hundreds of years of experience in the construction industry.

In what is acknowledged to be one of the industries with the highest risk of failure, what has enabled D.L. Poulin to remain a key player for more than three decades?

Commitment to Quality and Service

All contractors claim to do this, and some even succeed more often than not. D.L. Poulin, however, retains this dedication—through the use of TQM (Total Quality Management) and continuous improvement—on every project, from small tenant fit-ups to large, new manufacturing plants. You, as an owner, get the best building your money can buy.

Non-adversarial Problem Solving

We have found that getting along with people just isn’t that difficult. Shaking hands with an owner once a project is complete should be every bit as easy as shaking hands at the beginning of the project.

Owner Involvement

It’s your building that we’re constructing, and it only makes sense that you should be intimately involved in the process. So, along with the architect, engineers, subcontractors and suppliers, we consider you a vital part of the building team, with all of us working toward a common goal, meeting or exceeding your expectations, which is why we hold regular meetings with you to update you on progress, schedules, costs and anything else that you feel is relevant. Plus, we extend a standing invitation to you to join us at all our weekly progress meetings, where we coordinate our efforts with all the project’s participants.

Adherence to Schedule

As much as any other factor, completing a project on or ahead of schedule is critical to an owner. Everyone at D.L. Poulin understands this, and we make sure that everyone else on the building team does, also. Here, too, our record speaks for itself, Poulin has never, in all our years of operation, been assessed liquidated damages for finishing a project late.

State-of-the-art Technology

Unlike most contractors, who’ve had to be brought kicking and screaming into the computer age, D.L. Poulin saw the opportunities and advantages early. In only its second year in operation, 1975, the firm purchased its first computer.

Emphasis on Safety

There is nothing more important than the safety of those working on the job site. A good safety record also keeps worker’s comp and other insurance costs down—savings that can be passed along to the owner. That’s why D.L. Poulin not only has a safety officer who regularly inspects all our job sites, but also employs an outside independent safety consultant who visit our projects weekly and files a report directly to the president. His report covers not only Poulin employees, but the safety actions of every subcontractor working on the job. Our safety commitment led us to be one of the original members of the Maine Safety Compact, and one of our people was even selected to serve on the Governor’s Safety Committee, to help develop programs for other businesses to improve their safety performances.

Relationship Building

It goes without saying that by building close relationships with an owner, and delivering on our promises, we hope to gain referrals and opportunities for future work. We also, though, work very hard at forming similar ties with the architects, engineers, subcontractors and suppliers we work with. They appreciate the professional way D.L. Poulin treats them, including paying their bills on time. This encourages them to want to work with us again, and to give us every pricing advantage they possibly can.

It’s for all these reasons—and many others—that D.L. Poulin, Inc. has been chosen by such organizations as Yum! Brands, Burger King, Best Buy, McDonald’s, Applebee’s, Ruby Tuesday, Darden Restaurants, Carlson Restaurants, Bed Bath & Beyond/CTS, Wal-Mart, Brinker International, U.S. Postal Service, the Red Cross, medical facilities, motels, a host of school districts and others too numerous to mention, to bid and construct their buildings. Each wanted quality, value and on-time performance—and they got it—without the trauma most people expect to accompany a building project.
